Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) is proud to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Emmanuel Amadu, a student from the first batch of the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) Building Technology programme, who secured third place (Bronze) in the prestigious Green Building Competition organised by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group. The competition, held in Accra in July 2024, brought together 90 participants from across the country.

Amadu's remarkable feat is a testament to the innovative training provided by KsTU. His journey began in June 2021, during the second semester of his first year, when the University introduced the Design for Greater Efficiency (DFGE) course. This forward-thinking initiative was facilitated by Mr. Dennis Quansah from IFC, with coordination from Prof. Sarfo Mensah the Director of International Affairs and Institutional Linkages (IAIL), KsTU and Arch. Emmanuel Botwe.

The DFGE course equips students with the skills to optimise resource utilisation, design energy-efficient buildings, and evaluate building performance using the EDGE App. Despite the course's rigorous demands, a dedicated group of students, including Amadu, embraced the challenge, gained a deep understanding of architectural, engineering, and HVAC concepts for sustainable construction.

In 2022, Amadu and his team participated in the IFC student competition, where they designed a net-zero getaway house at minimal cost. Their innovative project earned them an honorable mention and set the stage for further success, including advanced training as EDGE experts.

In 2024, Amadu’s design of a passive building with sustainable interventions to minimise energy, water, and material consumption earned him the bronze award in the 3rd IFC student competition. His accomplishment underscores the effectiveness of KsTU’s forward-thinking curriculum and commitment to sustainability in the built environment.

As part of the award, Amadu and the fellow winners from KNUST and Central University were sponsored by IFC on an educational trip to Cape Town, South Africa. This invaluable experience provided them with exposure to global green building standards and a chance to network with industry leaders.

The DFGE programme continues to bridge the gap between the challenges of the built environment and the need for sustainable solutions, aligning perfectly with KsTU’s vision of shaping a sustainable future through technical education.

Kumasi Technical University is proud of Emmanuel Amadu’s achievement and remains committed to producing graduates who drive innovation, sustainability, and positive change.
