On Monday, 14th April 2025, Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) officially inaugurated the K-Innovation Hub, a cutting-edge facility designed to empower students and the public by transforming ideas into reality. The ceremony, held within the quad at the Old Library, was graced by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh, as the Special Guest, alongside several members of the University’s Management team.

The event kicked off with an exhibition of the various inventions and innovations by the students, where Prof. Dwomoh and attendees marvelled at what they saw regarding the students’ projects. The products highlight the creativity and technical prowess of KsTU students, setting the stage for the official launch of the K-Innovation Hub. The hub was established by the Centre for Research, Development, and Technology Incubation (CRDTI) and it is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies, including 3D printers, an air quality monitor to measure the quality of air. There were also drones, RC fish feeder and virtual reality (VR) headsets with all these products aimed at fostering innovation and skill development.

The K-Innovation Hub is poised to make significant contributions to several of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 3D printers enable training in modeling and rapid prototyping, supporting SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) by promoting sustainable industrialisation. The drone training programmes offer hands-on learning to build, programme, and customise drones for local applications which also aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by equipping individuals with marketable skills. Meanwhile, the VR headsets facilitate the development of teaching and learning materials for online education, further advancing SDG 4 by enhancing educational accessibility and quality.

A standout project showcased at the event was the RC fish feeder, developed by a team of students, which is a remote-controlled device designed to automate fish feeding in aquariums and ponds. The device allows users to schedule feeding times or manually control feeding through a remote control or smartphone application.

Prof. Dwomoh praised the CRDTI team and the students for their dedication to innovation, emphasising that the K-Innovation Hub will serve as a catalyst for creativity and entrepreneurship. “This hub is a testament to our commitment to nurturing talents and providing the tools needed to turn ideas into reality,” he remarked during the inauguration.
