KsTU Unveils Student-Built Electric Vehicle at 70th Anniversary Celebration

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has marked a major highlight of its 70th Anniversary celebrations with the unveiling of a student-built regenerative electric vehicle prototype, “Nimdeɛ Hyiren EV,” during its Alumni Homecoming and Grand Durbar.

The prototype, developed by final-year students of the Bachelor of Technology (BTech) in Automotive Engineering, was presented on Saturday, March 28, 2026, as part of an exhibition of student-led innovations. The vehicle quickly became one of the most talked-about projects at the event, drawing attention from alumni, industry players, and invited guests.

The project was undertaken as part of the students’ academic work under the supervision of Ing. Prof. Prince Owusu-Ansah. It responds to the growing need for cleaner transport solutions while exploring how such technologies can be developed locally to suit Ghana’s conditions.

At the centre of the vehicle’s design is a regenerative braking system that converts energy generated during braking into electrical power to recharge the battery. This feature improves efficiency and extends the vehicle’s driving range. According to the project supervisor, the vehicle is capable of covering an estimated 150 kilometres per cycle while recharging in motion.

The team also incorporated a compact monocoque chassis to improve structural strength and safety. Additional work was done to reinforce key components such as the suspension system, motor mounts, and battery housing, ensuring the prototype can withstand real operating conditions. Electrical systems and controls were equally configured to deliver stable and safe performance.

The project was carried out by Boanerges Safo Nyansaba Junior, Jacob Gyan, and Nathaniel Bamfo, with support from Dr. Alex J. Frimpong and Ing. Ebow Dadzie, under the Kantanka Automotive Team.

Speaking at the event, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh described the project as a clear example of the University’s focus on practical training and problem-solving. He noted that such initiatives demonstrate the capacity of students to develop solutions that respond directly to national challenges.

The unveiling formed part of a broader showcase of innovations during the anniversary celebrations, which brought together members of the University community and key stakeholders from across the country. The Ashanti Regional Minister, representing the Vice President, Baffour Owusu Amankwatia VI, Bantamahene was among dignitaries present.

The “Nimdeɛ Hyiren EV” reflects KsTU’s continued shift toward applied research and industry-focused training. As the University marks 70 years of technical education, projects like this point to its role in supporting Ghana’s transition to cleaner energy and advancing local manufacturing capacity.
