KsTU Hosts a Certificate Ceremony for STEIN Pavement Technology Training Programme
Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has wrapped up a week-long training programme in pavement technology, held at the Adako Jachie Campus from 3rd to 8th March 2025. The training formed part of the Industrial Vocational Training Programme in Africa and Asia through Technology Transfer from Japan (IVT Project) and focused on the application of the soil hardening agent STEIN in road construction and maintenance.
The sessions brought together students, masons, tilers, civil engineers, and other industry stakeholders, who received both theoretical and hands-on exposure to modern soil stabilisation methods. The Principal of the Adako Jachie Campus , professors, Campus Registrar, and members of the Estate Management Department were also in attendance.
Speaking at the event, Tonia Akua Owusuah Antwi, Project Assistant at UNIDO’s Investment and Technology Promotion Office in Tokyo emphaised how the training would helpparticipants build sustainable road.
“Today, we celebrate not only the completion of a rigorous training programme but also the commitment to innovation and sustainable development in our communities. The knowledge and skills you have acquired are vital for advancing infrastructure while ensuring environmental sustainability,” she said.
During the week, participants carried out Soil investigation and characterization tests at KsTU laboratories and project sites, STEIN mix design and thickness determination and Compressive strength testing of samples. Participants were encouraged to apply their new knowledge to improve road infrastructure and contribute to environmentally responsible development.
Dr. Aloysius Sam, Head of the Department of Construction Technology and Quantity Surveying, noted the value of the initiative for both students and artisans. He further said that This training will go a long way to serve our students and artisans, equipping them with practical knowledge that complements classroom learning. It is a valuable step in bridging the gap between theory and industry needs..
At the closing ceremony, certificates were presented to participants who successfully completed the programme.
The training was delivered in collaboration with SPEC Co. Ltd. (Japan), UNIDO, and other partners. It represents Phase II of the IVT Project, which follows the October 2024 Training-of-Trainers in Japan.
