An Engineer of KsTU Receives Engineering Excellence Award
Ing.Araba Amo-Aidoo has received the distinguished women In Engineering Excellence Awards at the just ended Ghana Institution of Engineers Awards at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology. She is a distinguished female Engineer, President of women in Engineering (Ashanti Region) and a staff of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU). She has contributed immensely to helping students from some public and private basic schools within the Kumasi metropolis and Ashanti Region as a whole.
Under her leadership, the Ashanti Region Branch of the Women in Engineering has organized a programme dubbed “Women in Engineering, there is room for everyone”. This was an outreach programme organized for about 50 junior high schools in the region and other practicing women in different fields of Engineering. Also, young ladies from a number of senior and junior high schools were invited to the programme. The objective of the programme was to help young female students to overcome the traditional barriers to Engineering. Over 1000 students attended the programme from 24 schools within the Ashanti Region.
Due to her pronounced mentorship and motivation to students, she gained a call up to be a facilitator for girls’ Science Education by the Lady Julia foundation for all Senior High Schools students in the Ashanti Bekwai district. Her contribution to the Ashanti Regional branch of Ghana Institution of Engineers cannot also be overemphasized. Ing. Araba has been instrumental in organizing several field trips and outreach programmes for students and has been with students to undertake various industrial visits. Furthermore, she has undertaken projects such as installation of solar panels systems and she has been part of a campaign for the need to shift from conventional energy system to renewable energy technologies. She holds a Bsc in Mechanical Engineering and an Msc in Renewal Energy Technologies.
She was awarded with an accompanying citation which read as follows: “For a female engineer who has contributed to the development of the profession through advocacy; in recognition of your achievement in encouraging and raising the interest of young ladies in engineering; for providing role models for female education in science and engineering for the benefit of the society, the Ghana Institution of Engineers accords you in Application and Advocacy of Engineering category, the distinguished Women In Engineering Excellence Award.”
