Kumasi Technical University Marks 70th Anniversary with Grand Alumni Homecoming and Durbar

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has successfully celebrated its 70th Anniversary Alumni Homecoming and Grand Durbar, bringing together distinguished dignitaries, alumni, industry leaders, staff, and students in a vibrant two-day celebration marked by pride, reflection, and renewed ambition.

Held under the theme, “70 Years of Transformative Technical Education: Honouring Our Legacy, Shaping the Future,” the event served as a historic moment for the University to reflect on its journey and reaffirm its commitment to innovation, skills development, and national progress.

Day One of the celebration saw a strong turnout of alumni from across Ghana and beyond, alongside staff and friends of the University. The atmosphere was filled with excitement as old students reconnected, shared memories, and celebrated the institution that shaped their careers and lives. Kumasi Technical University was filled with excitement and pride as alumni turned out in their numbers for Day 1 of the Homecoming celebrations.

Alumni of KsTU, together with staff and friends of the University from far and near, showed up in strong support, reconnecting, sharing memories, and celebrating the journey of an institution that has shaped generations. The atmosphere was vibrant, the energy unmatched, and the sense of belonging truly inspiring once again proving that KsTU is more than a university; it is a family.

The homecoming reinforced the University’s identity as a lifelong community, with alumni playing a central role in its continued growth and impact. The climax of the celebration on Day Two was a colourful Grand Durbar, where alumni, staff, and students proudly adorned themselves in the University’s 70th Anniversary cloth, creating a rich display of unity and heritage.

In his welcome address, the Vice-Chancellor, Gabriel Dwomoh, described the occasion as a defining moment in the University’s history. “We are gathered here not just to look back at seven decades of existence, but to celebrate seventy years of impact, innovation, and excellence,” he stated.

He noted that the celebration was threefold: to honour the visionaries who established the institution, to call for stronger partnerships with government and industry, and to showcase the University’s strides in STEM education and innovation. Representing the Vice President, Her Excellency Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Ashanti Regional Minister, Frank Amoakohene, praised KsTU for its pivotal role in national development.

He highlighted the University’s contribution to training skilled professionals who continue to drive industry, entrepreneurship, and socio-economic growth in Ghana. “For seventy years, Kumasi Technical University has stood as a beacon of practical knowledge and innovation, equipping young Ghanaians with the tools needed to transform society,” he remarked.

He further emphasised the importance of strengthening collaboration between academia, industry, and government to address real-time development challenges and position Ghana competitively in a technology-driven global economy.

A major highlight of the celebration was the unveiling of the University’s regenerative electric vehicle (EV), developed through a collaboration between students, faculty, and industry partners. The innovation, named “Nimde3 Hyiren EV,” represents a significant advancement from conventional electric vehicles, incorporating regenerative braking technology to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. The project was widely praised as a demonstration of KsTU’s commitment to practical, solution-driven innovation and its capacity to develop homegrown technologies that respond to modern challenges.

In addition to the electric vehicle, the University showcased a range of student and faculty innovations, including smart agricultural systems, drones, air quality monitors, and other engineering solutions aimed at addressing real-world problems. The celebration also provided an opportunity to reflect on the University’s evolution from its establishment in 1954 as a technical institute, through its years as a polytechnic, to its current status as a leading technical university in Ghana.

As the celebrations concluded, the Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed the University’s commitment to the future, highlighting its focus on digitalisation, artificial intelligence, sustainable engineering, and strengthened industry partnerships. He also expressed appreciation to alumni, staff, students, government, and partners for their continued support. “While we have achieved much, the world is evolving rapidly, and KsTU is ready to lead that change,” he noted.

With a rich legacy behind it and a clear vision ahead, Kumasi Technical University stands poised to play an even greater role in shaping Ghana’s technological advancement and economic transformation.
