KsTU's Department of Procurement and Supply Chain Management Celebrates Its 30th Anniversary

The Department of Procurement and Supply Chain Management (PSCM) at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) marked its 30th anniversary with a grand celebration on Monday, 5th August, 2024. The event was held at the New Great Hall of the University and brought together students, staff, alumni and esteemed guests to commemorate three decades of excellence and growth in Procurement and Supply Chain education.

Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh, Vice-Chancellor of Kumasi Technical University, chaired the occasion and delivered a heartfelt address. He acknowledged the Department’s achievements and emphasised the importance of continuous development in academia.

Dr. Gladys Tuo, Head of the PSCM Department, followed with an address that delved into the history of the department. She highlighted the remarkable journey of PSCM, which began with just one programme and 40 students. Today, the Department is a thriving hub for training supply chain experts, boasting an impressive enrolment of 1,060 students. Dr. Tuo also recognised the significant contributions of the Department to the University and its collaborations with other institutions, noting the Department’s status as one of the fastest-growing units within the University. She paid tribute to the founding members, including Mr.J.K. Hartford, Mr. Joseph Opoku and Mr. Charles Boakye, who laid the foundation for what has become a cornerstone of KsTU’s academic offerings.

“We deeply respect and appreciate everyone who has contributed to the Department’s success. As we look toward the future, we see endless potential and remain united as a community,” Dr. Tuo said. She also revealed that the Department is preparing to seek accreditation to offer a PhD programme in the near future, a significant step forward in its academic journey.

Mr. Simon Annan, President of the Ghana Institute of Procurement and Supply also addressed the gathering. He spoke on the topic “Evolution of Procurement in Ghana: Celebrating the Journey of the Past, Present, and Future.” Mr. Annan urged students to leverage the resources available to them and take inspiration from the great industry players in procurement who have emerged from the Department. He emphasised the importance of technology in driving the future evolution of procurement in Ghana.

The event also served as the launch of the official 30th anniversary T-shirt, symbolising the Department’s vibrant community and ongoing celebration. Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to learn from the presentations and network with alumni who have made significant strides in the field since the Department’s inception.

A special highlight of the programme was the honouring of Mr. Charles Boakye, the longest-serving part-time lecturer in the Department, for his invaluable contributions to the growth and success of PSCM at KsTU.

The 30th anniversary of the Department of Procurement and Supply Chain Management at Kumasi Technical University stands as a testament to the Department’s resilience, growth, and unwavering commitment to excellence in education and industry.

Kumasi Technical University was established in 1954 as Kumasi Technical Institute (K. T. I. ) to offer craft courses. In 1963, the Institute was converted to a non-tertiary Polytechnic status under the Ghana Education Service to start offering, in addition, technician diploma and sub- professional courses.
