Introduction

The Department of Interior Design and Materials Technology is one of the oldest departments at the University. The department has gone through several transformational stages to its current state and now runs HND INTERIOR DESIGN TECHNOLOGY (3 years’ duration) with a very high career prospects in the Built Environment.

The HND Interior Design and Technology programme aims at educating and training people to acquire competencies in the creation of intentional spatial interactions of the environments that sustain and support human beings to live to the highest of their capabilities and to have positive effect on them in whichever space they may find themselves (living, working and recreational). Our students are taught to become independent and effective learners to equip them to go into self-practice and further education by holistically promoting the CBT approach of practice, theory and entrepreneurship. The program is embedded with sustainability measures by promoting environmental awareness to support mankind and the climate.

Aims and Objectives
State the aims and objectives of the programme.
The programme is aimed at developing technical, problem-solving, critical-thinking and decision-making skills in graduates so that they can perform adequately at the workplace. The aim of the Higher National Diploma (HND) in Interior Design Technology is to prepare graduates to meet the national demand for middle-level managerial and higher technical level personnel who have the academic and technical skills to effectively work in the interior and allied industries.
Further, individuals would be adequately equipped with entrepreneurial skills to encourage them to set up their own small and hence medium scale industries to promote expansion and quality production in the industry. The programme would equally prepare graduates with the aptitudes and abilities for further education to encourage research and advance knowledge in the field and improve technology in the industry.

This programme will be able to:
a.    Train students to enable them communicate design concepts through precisely scaled drawings and other documents used in the industry.
b.    Equip students with the knowledge of the use of building and life safety codes, address environmental issues, and understand the basic construction and interior systems of buildings.
c.    Equip students with the skills to enable them to undertake research in the built environment as well as technical and vocational education and training for sustainable development.
d.    Teach students the professional and ethical principles related to interior design and furnishing.
e.    Provide academic preparation for the professional interior designer, as defined by the standards such as Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA).
