Department Profile

The Department of Oil and Gas Engineering, under the Faculty of Engineering and Technology, was established in 2021 after operating under the Department of Chemical Engineering for two (2) years. The Department  provides broad-based, multidisciplinary, petroleum exploration, production and environmental qualifications, allowing articulation to higher education as well as promoting career enhancement for successful graduates.Currently, the Department has one (1) Associate Professor, two (2) Senior Lecturers, and two (2) Lecturers and runs a B.Tech programme in Oil and Gas Engineering.

Vision

To become the one of the best Oil and Gas Engineering educational and training institutions in Ghana and Africa.

To achieve the vision, the department strives to train students to:

  • explore and evaluate oilfields for hydrocarbons by analyzing subsurface structures with geological and geophysical methods.
  • optimize production of oil and gas via proper well placement, production levels and enhanced oil recovery techniques. Also use computer simulations to assist in the identification of risks and to make forecasts on reservoir potential.
  • manage the interface between the reservoir and the well through such tasks as perforations, sand control, artificial lift, down-hole flow control and down-hole monitoring equipment. Also select surface equipment that separates the produced fluids (oil, natural gas and water).
  • manage the technical aspects of drilling both production and injection wells. Design equipment to extract oil and gas in the most profitable way.

Mission

The Department’s mission is to produce innovative, enterprising and industry – ready graduates with a firm grasp of the principles of oil and gas engineering through quality engineering education, to carry out applied research aimed at benefiting local industries in Ghana and Africa.
