The Women in Technology and Development (WITED) has held an event at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) in commemoration of this year’s International Women’s Day under the theme, “Breaking the bias.”
The programme congregated members of the Association and distinguished personalities across the nation to discuss issues affecting women and also deliberate on means of ensuring equitable access to opportunities by both men and women in all aspects of life.
Speaking at the event to mark the International Women’s Day, the Vice Chancellor, Ing. Prof. Osei-Wusu Achaw, said out of 1,960 students admitted this year, only 120, representing 6 percent are females therefore the University have set a STEM scholarship to support women who desire to study engineering and TVET programmes in the University.
The Director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, Prof. Dorothy Yeboah-Manu called for leadership training courses for females, and admonished the members of WITED to lobby for strategies that will benefit females. With these leadership training courses more of the girls will be encouraged to do the course we want them to do.
Deputy Minister of Education in charge of TVET, Hon. Gifty Twum-Ampofo advised the women to go beyond their limit regardless of our culture and religion have made you embrace mediocrity she urged women to re-psyche themselves and never be the weaker vessel. She reiterated the need to get women involved in management or decision-making bodies.

The National Chairperson of WITED, Dr. Patricia Owusu-Darko urged the younger generation to rise up to take advantage of the favourable education policies to empower themselves so that when there is an opportunity, they will be able to avail themselves to be of help.
The annual celebration of the International Women's Day held on March 8 is to appreciate the roles women and girls across the world play in the history of their respective countries and communities.
