Kumasi Technical University Launches 70th Anniversary Celebrations

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has officially launched its 70th Anniversary celebrations, marking seven decades of excellence in technical and vocational education. The launch, held at the New Great Hall, unveiled the various events and activities planned for the year-long celebration under the theme: “70 Years of Excellence: Steering the Wheels of Technical and Academic Vocational Education”.

The ceremony, graced by distinguished guests including Nana (Prof.) Mensah Bonsu, the Asakyirihene, representing Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, and Hon. Samuel Pyne (Mayor of Kumasi), showcased the University’s rich history, significant milestones, and aspirations for the future.

Dr. Kwame Addo Kufuor and Chancellor of KsTU who was the Chairman for the occasion, expressed profound appreciation for the contributions of past and present staff, students, and stakeholders in the Institution's journey. He further highlighted in his keynote address, the Institution's transformation from its establishment as Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) in 1954 to its current status as a leading technical university. “From its inception as KTI to its current status as Kumasi Technical University, the Institution has been associated with quality technical capacity building and the delivery of valuable innovative solutions. I am convinced that in the years ahead, this University will continue to assist Ghana in achieving its ambition of becoming a fully developed nation with advanced technology and industrial programmes,” Dr. Addo Kufuor stated.

He also emphasised the importance of maintaining patriotism, integrity and competence, urging students and graduates to embody these values to contribute to national development. He was categorical that “most successful and great nations are usually built on a tripod of patriotism, integrity, and competence. Ghana needs citizens and leaders who demonstrate this tripod.  So, wherever you find yourselves in the future, please remember the tripod”.

Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh, Vice-Chancellor of KsTU, reiterated the University’s commitment to providing quality education and producing graduates who are not only professionally skilled but also, responsible global citizens. He praised the University's advancements in research, innovative teaching methods, and strong industrial partnerships. “From groundbreaking research in engineering and technology to significant contributions in the field of Science, Mathematics, and more, the University has been at the forefront of advancements that have shaped the world,” Prof. Dwomoh noted.

Prof. Ben Baffoe Bonnie, Chairman of the University Council, underscored the Institution’s resilience and dedication to advancing its mission, even in the face of challenges.

The Anniversary will be climaxed in April 2025. The events of the celebration will include an exhibition to showcase some of the students’ inventions and innovations, medical outreach programmes, inter-faculty debates, a durbar, the launch of the KsTU’s History Book and a thanksgiving service.

The launch event symbolised a reflection on the university's past achievements, a celebration of its present successes, and a commitment to a future of continued excellence in technical and vocational education.

Kumasi Technical University was established in 1954 as Kumasi Technical Institute (K. T. I. ) to offer craft courses. In 1963, the Institute was converted to a non-tertiary Polytechnic status under the Ghana Education Service to start offering, in addition, technician diploma and sub- professional courses.
