KsTU Triumphs Over UMaT and University of Ghana to Claim Victory at WinE Affair 2024

Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has once again proven its unmatched innovation and leadership in engineering by securing first place at the 3rd edition of WinE Affair 2024. The competition was held from October 18th to 19th at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Accra with the theme “Sustainability through Diversity: Women Driving Change”. KsTU’s all-female team of engineers outshined teams from top universities across the country, reinforcing the Institution’s position as a trailblazer in technical education.
The brilliant KsTU team is made up of Celine Ofori-Mensah, Ellen Amoah, Rita Kunyah, Theresa Ama Nyarko Boadi, and Josephine Immaculate Asare, all Engineering students captivated the judges and audience alike with their innovative project titled AgriPly. The innovation featured in the project is a green eco-friendly sustainable composite material, made out of waste plastics and agricultural by- products, which seeks to fight off two global concerns which are pollution and deforestation.
Championing sustainability with ingenuity, the AgriPly project is not just a demonstration of technical prowess but also, a clear reflection of KsTU's dedication to solving real-world problems through sustainable development. By transforming agricultural and plastic waste into durable materials, the team’s project aims to reduce deforestation, tackle plastic pollution, and provide essential furniture for schools and other institutions.
While the AgriPly project propelled them to the top, the atmosphere at WinE Affair 2024 was filled with fierce competition. Kumasi Technical University triumphed over some of Ghana’s finest institutions. The University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) and the University of Ghana, Legon placed second and third respectively. Other universities like Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR), Ho Technical University, Takoradi Technical University, and Ashesi University also participated but could not match KsTU’s innovative excellence.
The victory does not only highlight the excellence of the students but also, demonstrates the unwavering support and guidance provided by the Kumasi Technical University’s Centre for Technology Transfer and Skills Development (CTTSD). The KsTU team was drawn from the Women in Engineering (WiNE) Chapter of KsTU, located within the Engineering Faculty which further emphasises the University's commitment to nurturing talent and fostering innovation among its students.
The WinE Affair serves as a crucial platform for empowering women in engineering, encouraging them to address societal issues through technology. It is not just a competition, but a space for women engineers to showcase their problem-solving abilities and to develop entrepreneurial ventures based on their innovative ideas.
