KsTU Estate Management Students Gain Practical Insights from Educational Tour to Newmont Ghana Gold Limited

Students of the Department of Estate Management at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) have undertaken an educational tour to Newmont Ghana Gold Limited's Ahafo South Mine as part of the efforts to bridge classroom learning and industry practice.
The visit, which formed part of the department's practical training programme, was conducted in two batches, with the first group of students touring the facility on Friday 22nd March 2026, and the second group completing the exercise on Friday, 29th May 2026.
The students were warmly received by the Community Development Officer at Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, who provided valuable insights into the company's approach to responsible mining and community relations. He highlighted how Newmont builds trust and transparency with its host communities through stakeholder engagement, effective land access management, grievance resolution mechanisms, and equitable community employment systems.
As part of the tour, the students were introduced to the various systems and technologies that support Newmont's mining operations. They observed firsthand how advanced monitoring tools and strict safety protocols are integrated into the company's daily activities to ensure operational efficiency.
Given their academic background in Estate Management, the students expressed keen interest in property management practices, internship opportunities, and career prospects within the mining industry. Addressing these interests, the Lead for People Business Partner at Newmont Ghana Gold Limited, delivered an engaging presentation on the role of facility management within the company's operations.
She highlighted how facility management teams work collaboratively to ensure the smooth functioning of the mine's infrastructure and support services while maintaining high standards of safety and operational efficiency. also provided valuable insights into Newmont's internship programmes, graduate development pathways, and employment opportunities, encouraging students to position themselves competitively for careers within the industry. Her presentation offered a practical perspective on how Estate Management graduates can contribute meaningfully to large-scale mining operations through property and facilities management.
Students also benefited from an insightful presentation by the Team Lead, Land and Access Control at Newmont Ghana Gold Limited. His presentation titled "Land Access and Land Use: The Ahafo Mine Experience" provided practical perspectives on land acquisition processes, Newmont's land access objectives, and the legislative framework governing land acquisition and mining operations in Ghana.
To complement the presentations, the students embarked on a guided tour to affected mining sites, rehabilitation and reclamation sites, settlements, and other operational areas within the mining area. The field experience enabled them to engage directly with Newmont personnel, observe operational procedures, and gain a deeper understanding of responsible mining practices, socio-economic investments, and community development initiatives undertaken by the company.

Speaking after the tour, Dr. Ebenezer Afrane, Industrial Attachment Coordinator of the Department of Estate Management, expressed his gratitude to Newmont Ghana Gold Limited for hosting the students and providing them with the opportunity to gain practical industry exposure.
He further commended Newmont for its willingness to share knowledge and experiences with the students, describing the tour as a meaningful learning opportunity that would contribute significantly to their academic and professional development.
The tour provided students with a unique opportunity to appreciate the practical applications of estate management, land administration, property management, and stakeholder engagement within the mining industry. It also reinforced the University's commitment to producing industry-ready graduates through experiential and hands-on learning opportunities.
For the students, the visit was both meaningful and enriching, offering valuable lessons that will complement their academic training and prepare them for future professional practice.
