KsTU Collaborates with Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development – Brandenburg, Germany

Kumasi Technical University in its quest to increase its output by research and well equipped graduates training programmes partners with Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development from Germany for mutual benefits. Prof. Dr. Tobias Cremer of the Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development in his maiden visit to Ghana explained to members of the University’s Academic Board the need for such collaborations. He elaborated on his University being Germany’s greenest university and its campus located just 60 km away from the hustle and bustle of the German capital, Berlin.

The University has seventeen (17) degree programmes with a unique profile focusing on sustainable economics, rural environment and having close cooperation with regional and international research and business partners. Prof. Cremer added that the University had already partnered with University of Education, Kumasi and upon further consultations chose Kumasi Technical University because of similar goals and interests. The collaboration which is being spearheaded by Dr. Addo Koranteng an alumnus of Eberswalde University for Sustainable Development and Senior Research Fellow from the Institute of Research and Innovation Development is aimed at ensuring that KsTU positions itself as the leading Technical University in Ghana. It also affords the opportunity for KsTU to attract foreign students and funding.

This collaboration among other things aims at granting opportunities for Student Exchange Programmes, Exchange of Lecturers and Opportunity for Joint Research between the two Universities. The collaboration will also position the University to offer courses in global change with assistance from Prof. Dr. Tobias Cremer.

Prof. Dr. Cremer further explained the areas of interest of this collaboration as two fold, firstly it is in the area of Research; Sustainability/ Ecosystem Management and Conservation, Climate change management and adaptation, Biosphere Reserve Bosomtwi, Agroforestry/ SRC, Forestry; Forest Management (“new“ tree species; yield modelling),  IT in Forestry and wood industry,  Wood technology/ engineering, Sustainable Business and tourism, Funding possibilities - EU (e.g. H2020), German Ministries, Foundations.

The second area of collaboration is in the field of Exchange: Mobility projects, Capacity building (students, lecturers, researchers, administrative staff), Exchange in both directions, learning from each other, Setting up study programmes together/ acknowledging whole courses to facilitate exchange (esp. IFEM program), Funding possibilities, DAAD (UAS-programme).

About KsTU

Kumasi Technical University was established in 1954 as Kumasi Technical Institute (K. T. I. ) to offer craft courses. In 1963, the Institute was converted to a non-tertiary Polytechnic status under the Ghana Education Service to start offering, in addition, technician diploma and sub- professional courses.
