Guidance and Counselling Directorate Makes Strides Towards Mental Health Awareness and its Management
In a proactive move to prioritise the mental well-being of its students, Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) recently organised a seminar hosted by the Guidance and Counselling Directorate. The event aimed to enhance mental health awareness and explore effective management strategies for students.
Ms. Felicia Ofosuaa Tettey, the Deputy Director of the Guidance and Counselling Directorate opened the seminar by introducing the esteemed guest and also outlined the purpose of the gathering. The event, attended by departmental counselors sought to shed light on the crucial role counsellors play and delve into the profound impact of mental health on socioeconomic, communal and personal development.
Dr. Ruth Owusu Antwi, the Head of the Psychiatric Unit at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) mounted the stage to deliver a comprehensive presentation. She addressed various aspects of mental health, including mental illnesses, risk factors, common issues among students, identification of challenges, causes, effects and effective management and coping strategies.
Emphasising the importance of safeguarding individual mental health, Dr. Antwi highlighted the fundamental human rights of people. She stressed the need for individuals to protect their mental well-being, access high-quality and affordable mental healthcare, enjoyment of inclusion, freedom and equal opportunities within their communities.
The seminar served as a platform for the University community to deepen its understanding of mental health and equip counselors with the knowledge and tools necessary to support students facing mental health challenges.
