Faculty of Engineering Organises a Day's Seminar on Nuclear Energy
The Department of Chemical Engineering under the auspices of the Faculty of Engineering in collaboration with the School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences of the University of Ghana, has organized a day’s seminar at the New Great Hall. The seminar was on the topic “Peaceful Application of Nuclear Sciences and Technology”. The team from University of Ghana comprised Prof. Yaw Serfoh-Armah (Dean, SNAS), Dr. Seth Debrah (Ag. Head, Nuclear Engineering Department) and Prof. J. R. Fianko (Head, Nuclear Sciences and Application Department) as well as Castro Dumenya (Student President, Ghana Nuclear Society).
The Acting Vice Chancellor of KsTU, Prof. Asiamah Yeboah who chaired the programme welcomed the team from School of Nuclear and Allied Sciences (SNAS) and thanked them for readily agreeing to partner with the Department of Chemical Engineering for the seminar. He further stressed that KsTU was ready to support the Department and any other department of the University for such positive collaborative programmes. Also present at the programme was the Vice Dean of Engineering, Dr. Abena Obiri Yeboah who sat in for the Dean of Engineering Prof. Agbesi Acheampong. She emphasised that the seminar was aimed at promoting the idea of starting a Nuclear Science programme at KsTU.
Prof. Serfoh - Armah who was the guest speaker for the programme underscored the fact that KsTU was strategically placed to begin the programme. He explained that SNAS adheres to strict standards and hence runs programmes on behalf of the International Atomic Energy as well as postgraduate programmes. Dr. Seth Debrah and Prof. J. R. Fianko enlightened participants about the usefulness and job prospects of pursuing Nuclear Sciences. Participants were educated about the various sectors of human lives where Nuclear Energy is used. These include preservation of food, helping to cure cancer patients and aiding in the drilling of boreholes. Job Prospects include professional such as Mine inspectors, Health Nutritionists, Chemists, Geo-Chemists, Nuclear Plant Officers among others.
Nana (Prof.) Ing. Osei-Wusu in his closing remarks, thanked all who made it for the programme and the level of enthusiasm showed by all present. He was particularly grateful to Prof. Kuye, the Nigerian visiting Professor who led the organization of the programme.
