Description of Course

Chemical and allied processes consist of energy systems, and also involvement in handling hazardous substances. Such processes require effective process safety for loss prevention. Operating systems such as process plants, fuel transport and storage require process safety engineering management framework which includes application of sound engineering principles and rules to establish inherently safety design of the systems for safe operation. The course will equip trainees to understand processes of hazardous systems, identify risks of hazardous substances, energy, and process conditions, and apply sound controls including inherently safety design, provision of safety devices and systems and industrial hygiene controls.

The course is more suitable to engineering science and applied technology professionals who wish to work or are working in chemical, petrochemical, oil and gas exploration and production, pharmaceutical plants,  food processing, mining and mineral processing, transportation and  port industry. This module of process safety is quite unique, because it is structured to aid non-chemical engineering professionals to have better understanding of various process industries, process calculations for energy and material requirement of processes, process equipment design, overview of plant design, basic process controls and transport systems (pumps, blowers etc), and process flow diagrams, and piping and instrumentation.

Trainees will also know some safety sciences including , statistics and history of industrial accidents, safety culture, human factors, safety rules, codes and standards, process safety hierarchy, toxicology and industrial hygiene, source and dispersion models, inherently safety design, fires and explosion, process inerting techniques, confine space entry, safe work practices, permit works, static electricity, ventilation systems, fire equipment and sprinkler systems, relief systems and designs, flare system, scrubber, flash drum, condenser,  flame proof equipment, hazard identification (material, process and energy) and evaluation using HAZID, HAZOP , FMEA etc., and incident investigations. Additionally the delivery plan for this course is competency based approach, and trainees would go through assignments, individual and group presentations, tests and examinations prior to award of process safety engineering management.

Our delivery excellence is largely dependent on the consultants who have: strong chemical engineering background, process safety practice, higher education, and their deep understanding of principles of process safety management in process industries.

Relevant Industry Standards: PSM, ASME, NFPA, API etc.
