Programme Aims, Objectives and Outcomes programme.
Aim
The main aim of the programme is to produce competent graduates with the requisite knowledge and skills needed to process and preserve food with the view of ensuring food security, value addition, and economic growth of the country.
Objectives
Equip students with theoretical and practical skills needed to perform professional tasks in the food industry.
- Develop the capacity of students to conduct research in emerging trends in the food industry. iii. Train students to critically analyse and solve problems realistically, and ethically in the food industry.
- Inculcate in students entrepreneurial and business management skills for the food industry
- Impart research and analytical skills to students to facilitate their academic progression in higher education.
Intended/Expected Outcomes
At the end of the programme, graduates would be able to:
- Identify food commodities and techniques for their processing and preservation.
- Process foods using emerging technologies such as biotechnology and non-thermal processing technologies (ultra-sonification, ionizing radiation, high pressure, ohmic and dielectric processing).
- Conduct research with the aim of solving challenges in the Food industry. iv. Set up and operate food processing ventures.
- Undertake postgraduate studies in food and other related programmes.
Students’ Admission, Progression and Graduation
Entry requirements for admission of students:
The duration of the Master of Technology programme is two (2) years, and to gain admission to the programme, an applicant must satisfy the following minimum entry requirements:
- Applicants must possess a BTech or BSc Food Science and Technology related degree or equivalent qualification.
- Applicants with BTech or BSc in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Agriculture are eligible to apply.
- All applicants, except past graduates of Kumasi Technical University, must submit official transcripts of their academic records.
- Applicants with at least one-year post-qualification industrial experience will be an added advantage.
- Preference will be given to applicants with 1st Class and 2nd Class Honours. Applicants with lower divisions will have to pass an interview before they are admitted into the programme.
- All foreign applicants must provide their certificates which shall be referred to GTEC for determination of equivalences and eligibility for admission to tertiary institutions in Ghana (NAB) Act, 2007 {Act 744 (2(2b)}).
Progression
To progress to the second year, candidates must pass all courses before they would be allowed the commence their research work.
Requirements for Graduation
- Candidates must pass all courses;
- Candidates require a minimum of 72 credits for the 2-year research-based programme; and c. Pass a thesis.
