Profile Of The Pro Vice-Chancellor

Ing. Prof. Abena Agyeiwaa Obiri-Yeboah is an Associate Professor in the Civil Engineering Department and the Pro Vice-Chancellor at Kumasi Technical University (KsTU). She is a Senior Professional Engineer (SPE) of the Ghana Institution of Engineering (GhIE) and a member of the Ghana Science Association (GSA). She holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), a masters in Road and Transportation Engineering and a PhD in Civil Engineering from the same university. Prof. Obiri-Yeboah serves as a Research Fellow at the Regional Transport Research and Education Centre Kumasi (TRECK) at KNUST.

Prof. Obiri-Yeboah has over 20 years’ work and practice experience since completing her first degree. She was the first Program Assistant for the flagship Road and Transportation Engineering Program (RTEP) of the Civil Engineering Department at KNUST from 2006-2008. In 2008, she joined the then Kumasi Polytechnic (now Kumasi Technical University) as a lecturer at the Civil Engineering Department. She then rose through the ranks to become the first female Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology (2019-2021) and the first female Director of Planning and Quality Assurance (2021-2023) before her appointment as the first female Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University. Abena has also served in various other capacities of the university such as the first female Vice Dean of the Graduate School, KsTU (2017-2019), first female Head, Civil Engineering Department (2015-2017), and the first female Vice-Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Technology (2015-2017). She is also the first female to attain the Associate Professor status at the KsTU.

Ing. Prof. Obiri-Yeboah is a dynamic member of the Women in Engineering (WINE) division of the Ghana Institution of Engineering and was a member of the Research and Awards Committee of the GhIE for the 2021/2022 Council year. Ing. Obiri-Yeboah is a board member of the first constituted Ghana Welding Bureau (GWB) Board which seeks to enhance and certify local welders to international standards to bring Ghanaians into the upstream petroleum industry to enhance local content of the nation. She mentors other engineering students in Ghana and beyond.

In her leisure hours, she loves to learn new languages, watch movies, sing, and read. She is married with three children. 

About KsTU

Kumasi Technical University was established in 1954 as Kumasi Technical Institute (K. T. I. ) to offer craft courses. In 1963, the Institute was converted to a non-tertiary Polytechnic status under the Ghana Education Service to start offering, in addition, technician diploma and sub- professional courses.
