Team KsTU Shines at ACity Tech Expo 2025
Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) continues to shine on the national stage as Team KsTU emerged the first runner-up and received the Most Impactful Project Award at the prestigious ACity Tech Expo 2025, hosted by Academic City University. Competing against nine other universities, Team KsTU impressed the judges with their innovative project, the RC Fish Feeder which secured them the overall second position.
The RC Fish Feeder is a remote-controlled device designed to automate fish feeding in aquariums and ponds. The device allows users to schedule feeding times or manually control feeding through a remote control or smartphone application. The prototype was constructed using wood, plastic, and metallic materials which demonstrated the potential to revolutionise aquaculture by ensuring efficiency, sustainability, and responsible resource use.

The team leader, Emmanuel Owusu Gyamfi revealed that future enhancement to the project will include full automation and the integration of a GPS tracker to improve monitoring and efficiency.
According to him the device supports the sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2,12 and 14. He explained that the project supports SDG 2 which talks about Zero Hunger which enhances sustainable fish farming by ensuring optimal nutrition for fish, boosting food production efficiency , It also aligns with SDG 12 – Responsible Consumption and Production, as it minimizes overfeeding and food waste, reducing water pollution Additionally, the device contributes to SDG 14 – Life Below Water by controlling feed amounts to prevent excess nutrients while supporting sustainable aquaculture to ease pressure on wild fish stocks.
The talented team behind this groundbreaking project includes Emmanuel Owusu Gyamfi (Mechanical Engineering, Level 300), Salifu Iddrisu (Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Level 200), David Otitiaku (Artificial Intelligence, Level 300), and Rita Kunya (Mechanical Engineering - Plant, Level 200). Their collaborative effort and innovative thinking earned them a well-deserved second-place, along with a plaque and a substantial cash prize.

Following their outstanding performance, Team KsTU presented their project and the awards to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh and the Senior Management at the Council Chamber of the University. Prof. Dwomoh congratulated the students for their exceptional achievement and encouraged them to aim for gold in future competitions, promising that securing first place would earn them scholarships. He also announced a special citation in honour of the team and revealed that the University has allocated GHȻ 50,000 to facilitate the development of such projects and in support of future competitions.
The project was developed under the expert mentorship of Ing. Dr. Joseph X. F. Ribeiro, Head of the K-Innovation Hub, whose leadership continues to inspire students at KsTU. He noted that the prototype RC Fish Feeder project cost GHC 5,000 and its future developments
