Profile of the Vice-Chancellor

Professor Gabriel Dwomoh’s journey to assuming the position of Vice-Chancellor has been characterized by a steadfast commitment to academic excellence. Born at Kotei-Deduako, a suburb of Kumasi in the Ashanti region, his ascent on the academic ladder began with a determination to make a lasting impact on higher education. This ambition was ignited when he saw a fellow Ghanaian adorned in the regalia of a distinguished university. Driven by the desire to be part of that esteemed institution, either as a student or a lecturer, he set forth on a remarkable academic journey that has now culminated in his appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of Kumasi Technical University (KsTU). 

Hailing from a middle-income household, Prof. Dwomoh held education in high regard, leading to his enrolment at the renowned Opoku Ware School with student identity AR 206. His dedication and diligence led to outstanding academic achievements, earning him admission to the University of Cape Coast, where he pursued a Bachelor of Secretaryship degree and graduated with first-class honours. This achievement marked just the beginning of his academic pursuits, as he furthered his studies with a Master of Business Administration (Finance) degree from Lincoln University in the United Kingdom. 

On his return to Ghana, Prof. Dwomoh continued his academic journey at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), where he obtained a second Masters degree. His thirst for knowledge and expertise propelled him to the Costa Rica Business School, where he earned his PhD in Human Resource Management. 

Prof. Dwomoh’s teaching career commenced at Sunyani Polytechnic, now known as Sunyani Technical University, before joining Kumasi Technical University in 2009. Through unwavering dedication and perseverance, he steadily ascended the academic ranks, now reaching the pinnacle of his career as the Vice-Chancellor. His extensive research portfolio encompasses various domains notably: Expatriate Management, Human Resource Management as well as Industrial Relations. Noteworthy among his research achievements is the study titled, “Knowledge and Skills Gap of Technical Universities in Ghana,” which facilitated a transformative workshop for the staff of Ghanaian universities. 

Some of the palpable achievements of Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh are unparalleled. As the Director of Faculty of Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development (FEED), he led the Faculty to develop and secure accreditation for a BTech Top-up programme in Entrepreneurship and Finance. He established a seed money to assist Entrepreneurship Students Ventures and also, established partnerships with Rural Enterprise Programme (REP) on government projects for Micro, Small and Medium Scale Enterprises. 

Prof. Gabriel Dwomoh was once the Director of Institute of Research, Innovation and Development (IRID). He led the Institute to be registered as a recognised and approved centre for MMDAs to award government contracts. As the Director of the Institute, he developed a proposal and secured funding to train Leathers and Shoe-Makers Association in Ghana. 

Furthermore, some impressive successes were chalked during Prof. Dwomoh’s tenure as Director of International Affairs and Institutional Linkages (IAIL). He led the University to sign over thirty (30) international agreements with foreign universities to cover different areas of collaborations during his tenure. The enrolment of international students increased tremendously. He developed a proposal with Rizhao Polytechnic, China to establish a Luban Workshop in the areas of Creative Arts and Mechanical Engineering. Prof. Dwomoh also developed a proposal and secured funding from Association of Commonwealth Universities to train staff and students on online teaching and learning and again developed a proposal and secured funding from Christian Millionaires Book Club, UK to assist needy students in the University. 

Myriad of community services have been rendered to Kumasi Technical University by him at various levels either as the Chairman or member of numerous statutory and non-statutory committees. 

Prof. Dwomoh’s community service at the national level is highly commendable. He is a Board Member of Asokore Rural Bank PLC; a facilitator (Lead Consultant) for Amansie South District Assembly for training programmes in performance appraisal and performance contract organized for their staff. He has also served on several committees in search of personnel to occupy top managerial positions. 

The international dimension of Professor Dwomoh’s community service cannot be overemphasised. He is a reviewer and board member for some top rank peer reviewed journals. 

Prof. Dwomoh was a team member for the implementation of Partnership for Applied Sciences (PASS) Project which was financed by DAAD; Partner Representative – Global Talent Mentoring, Germany: Mentees and Mentors as well as Institutional Coordinator for Erasmus+ Staff and Student Mobility programme. 

He is indeed a man of many parts. With regards to winning of projects, grants and funding for the University, he has chalked a lot of successes which include the following: He played a leading role to develop and defend a proposal to secure a grant from Ghana National Gas Company Limited for retooling the Oil and Gas Laboratory with a project sum of GHC2,000,000.00. He championed the Erasmus+ for Staff and Students Mobility Project with six universities in Turkey, a project which has a two-year duration (2023 to 2025). The Project gives students and staff from different universities the opportunity to experience different learning environments. 

He was part of the consortium that developed a proposal to secure funding for KsTU regarding Partnership for Enhanced and Blended Learning Project, Association of Commonwealth Universities, UK. The project involves twelve universities from Nigeria and Ghana with a project sum of £360,000.00. 

His membership of international bodies, including the International Research Association underscores his commitment to advancing knowledge and expertise in diverse domains. During his leisure hours, he relaxes by watching movies and football, particularly, supporting Manchester City. As a devoted family man, Prof. Dwomoh is happily married to Rosemond and their union is blessed with four children. The life and the academic journey of Professor Gabriel Dwomoh (Gabby, as he is affectionately called), will forever be inspiring to young lecturers who aspire to greater height.
