The Department of Interior Design and Materials Technology (formerly known as the Department of Interior Architecture and Furniture Production) under the Faculty of Built and Natural Environment succeeded the Furniture Unit of the then Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI) which was established by Government of Ghana in May 1952. It is interesting to note that the workshop of the Technical Teachers College, now University of Education of Winneba-Kumasi Campus started at this department. When this Workshop and Furniture Unit assumed a departmental status, it was first named as Machine Woodwork and Cabinet Making Department. During that time, City and Guilds Courses and Examinations were the main mandate. However, as the department expanded, the name was changed to Furniture Design and Construction which came with corresponding change of in the City and Guilds Programme. Until the department was renamed as above in September 2012, it was called, the Department of Furniture Design and Production under the Faculty of Engineering.
